n the steel export business, one of the most common questions we get at ROGOSTEEL is: "Is Z275 really necessary, or can I save money with Z120?"
As a manufacturer, our answer is always the same: Zinc coating is not just a thickness; it is your product's lifespan. Choosing the wrong specification might save you a few dollars per ton today, but it could cost you a fortune in structural failure and rust remediation in three years.
Galvanized steel (GI) protects the underlying steel base through "sacrificial protection." The zinc layer corrodes so the steel doesn't have to.
Z120 (120g/m²): Total zinc coating weight on both sides. This is often considered "Commercial Grade" or "Light Duty."
Z275 (275g/m²): The industry standard for high-quality industrial construction (aligned with ASTM A653 or EN 10346).
The environment's humidity and salinity dictate how fast the zinc is consumed.
Coastal & Industrial Zones: Within 5km of the sea, the air is thick with chloride ions. Z120 can show signs of red rust in as little as 3–5 years here. For these areas, Z275 is a non-negotiable requirement to ensure the structure lasts 15+ years.
Inland & Dry Climates: In arid regions with low pollution, Z120 or Z140 offers an excellent balance of cost and performance.
Temporary Structures: For site hoarding, temporary sheds, or short-term roofing, Z100–Z120 is a cost-effective choice.
Permanent Infrastructure: For industrial plants, grain silos, or solar mounting systems, the design life is usually 20–25 years. Choosing Z275 (or even Z350) is a long-term investment protection.
Higher zinc coatings like Z275 provide a better physical buffer during the roll-forming process. When paired with high-strength grades like S350GD, a thicker zinc layer ensures that the coating remains intact at the bends, preventing micro-cracks where corrosion typically starts.
In the global market, "Z275" is sometimes promised but not delivered. Many low-cost suppliers may quote Z275 but deliver Z180 to cut costs.
Pro Tip: At ROGOSTEEL, we always advise our clients to verify the coating weight through an MTC (Mill Test Certificate) or third-party SGS testing. It is better to pay 10% more for genuine material now than 300% more to replace a rusted roof later.
Choose Z120: If you are building in a dry, mild environment and cost-efficiency is your absolute priority for a short-term project.
Choose Z275: If you are building for the long term, near the coast, or in heavy industrial areas.
